Lots of PA/EA jobs advertised describe the client as ‘Amazing’, ‘Incredible’, ‘Market leading’ or another similar generic word, but what happens when your client is truly all of those things….. how do I describe them then?
Rather than use generic words, I am going to tell you what this Founder is really like.
He’s fast-paced, always one step ahead of himself, he’s impatient and he struggles with errors.
He describes himself as “a bit of a maverick” when it comes to making decisions – he gets an idea in his head and he runs with it.
And that way has served him well; he’s grown his business to around 45 people over the past five years and I guess for recruitment terms we’d call him a HNWI.
With interests in a number of different business areas from technology, property investments, philanthropy and a motorsport-based investment he’s a colourful character who people genuinely like.
His last assistant has been with him since the beginning but having had a baby during lockdown has decided to not return to work and remain at home.
This has caused him to feel unsettled. His plans for returning to the office in the coming months were centred around him having ‘his right hand’ back.
And now he isn’t going to have that person, so you’re going to have to work fast. You’re going to have to learn remotely and you’re not going to really get any form of handover.
You’re going to have to learn ‘him’ and ‘his ways’ fast.
But in good news he’s fair. He understands the challenge his new Assistant will face and you’re not going to expected to perform miracles on day one. He understands the challenges he and you will face in the coming months as life changes (again).
He’s a family man; there’s no late-night parties or extravagant dinners (when allowed), he’s a work hard type person who will be in the office at 7:30am-8:00am and be there until 6:00pm-6:30pm but when he leaves, he ‘switches off’.
This is NOT a 24/7 role.
But he may need support at weekends or the evening on the odd occasion because he can’t find something or needs you to remind him of something. This is going to be very limited, but we wanted you to know it may happen.
Languages aren’t important but if you have Italian it could be useful.
You’ll work alongside him and his team. The office structure is flat – there are few if any egos and everyone seems to enjoy being there and because of that, the office has a real family feel.
During lockdown he’s gone out of his way to make sure people are ‘OK’ – he’s done a lot of things off his own back – he’s sent gifts, organised online events to unite the ‘family’.
His wife, whilst not involved day-to-day is very much part of that office family and in the past would pop in and work closely with him on certain projects.
I don’t like describing roles as ‘nice’ but sometimes we come across a role, a person or a team who are exactly that.
PAs who are available immediately or at short notice are likely to stand more chance of success in the interview process given his eagerness to get things ‘sorted’.
