Legal Counsel – Battersea
£80,000 - £105,000
Overview of role:
Reporting to the Director & General Manager, the Legal Counsel will advise on all legal matters relating to the Group’s businesses and operations in the UK in particular construction and property development, sales and leasing, and corporate and general commercial matters.
Main Duties:
To advise and work closely with all control functions such as Projects, Cost Control, Marketing,
HR and Finance on legal issues arising from the Group’s business and operations.
Drafting and reviewing leases, tenancy agreements and contracts, and advising on laws and regulations.
- Drafting and reviewing contracts/agreements and corporate documents.
- Advising business units on relevant legal issues arising from the Group’s businesses and operations.
- Assisting with and handling the Group’s acquisition/disposal transactions, corporate restructuring, litigation proceedings, sale of properties and financing matters.
- Dealing and liaising with external parties including external lawyers, regulators, Governmental bodies, etc.
- Conducting legal research, advising and providing business units with up-to-date legal and statutory development of relevance to the Group’s businesses and operations.
- Assisting with the review, updating and implementation of company policies to ensure compliance of new legislation and regulations.
- Reporting to Group General Counsel- HK & Overseas and working with the legal team in the Hong Kong office on material legal matters relating to the Group’s businesses and operations in the UK.
- Reporting documents to Hong Kong Office in accordance with the HPG Legal Documents checklist.
- Assisting with ad-hoc projects.
- Provide legal advice to business managers to ensure that legal issues are identified and resolved and that legal risk is managed appropriately.
- Ensure that all legal risks are identified, covered and controlled in the implementation of new projects, systems and procedures.
- Develop and deliver strategic legal risk management initiatives in conjunction with the Director and General Manager.
- Identify and meet management information requirements for the measurement of legal risk exposure, performance (both of internal and external legal resources) and productivity.
- Assist in the organisation of internal/external reviews to share best practice across relevant parts of the business.
- Provide education, training and support to the businesses on relevant legal risk issues and developments.
- Ensure the legal service and support (both internal and external) provided to the business is of the highest standard, in so doing, establishing a “client satisfaction” process in relation to the delivery of legal services.
- Ensure an up to date and relevant knowledge of principal areas of law and practice in the UK.
- Manage and control external legal resources in terms of cost and performance, including negotiation and settlement of external lawyers’ fees.
Essential skills, attributes & qualifications
- First degree in Law
- Qualified and experienced Solicitor
- Minimum 10 years post qualification experience in commercial property
- Excellent communication and analytical skills
- Legal drafting
- Ability to work individually and as party a team
- Ability to assimilate information quickly
- Strong drivers around Personal Excellence and Professional Discipline
- Personal integrity
Desirable
- Post qualification experience in commercial property, construction or commercial law
- Previous experience of working for a UK property developer
