The Growing Trend: “Start-Ups”

In 2014, Greater London saw 184,671 new start-ups take hold. Whilst this shows that it is easier and cheaper to set up a new business these days, it also means that there is an overspill of budding entrepreneurs, hungry for their own taste of success.

The world of apps is growing day by day meaning that technology start-ups are budding everywhere. Apps like Spotify and Last.Fmwhich have started as a small enterprise solely for the phone users have expanded beyond their smartphone confines and turned into hugely successful companies making huge amounts of money.

Also growing is the “Angel Investors” business, whereby the investor (usually a businessman or woman has made their money in an entirely different sector) use their disposable finance to make an investment. The investor would normally take shares in your business in return for providing equity finance. With these investors injecting money into start-ups all over London, there is even more opportunity for them to grow and expand even further… which means they have the funds to get the business support they need and go from strength to strength.

What Bain and Gray are increasingly noticing is that these entrepreneurs are unable to cope on their own with the extremely large volume of administration, diary management and office management that is required.

So what can you expect from a PA role for a start-up business?

  • Huge exposure to all areas of the business
  • Close relationships with your seniors
  • The opportunity to make the role your own
  • A great deal of helping your director manage his workload – this is all new for them/him/her too!
  • Picking up new skills that are likely to overstep the boundary of an ordinary PA role (who knew that a PA for a start-up tech would eventually become a coding queen!).

Bain and Gray have extensive experience in supplying technology (and other variations) of start-ups with high-calibre candidates with the hunger and passion that is required to succeed in keeping their finger on the pulse in a fast-paced PA or office management role.
