Finding a new permanent role can be a frustrating and disappointing experience for numerous reasons, but all too often it seems that the disappointment stems from the fact that the candidate has registered with the wrong agency for their needs.

As the candidate, you must make sure you are registered with the right agency for you. Do your research and find out more about the agency before you begin to make contact with them – and don't be afraid to ask their consultants when you do make contact questions about market activity, how they operate and what their procedure is. Transparency from the beginning of your recruitment journey is vital.

Although recommendations are a trustworthy source of referral and particular agencies may be impressive in their specific field, you need to establish whether they right for you. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Does this agency cover the industry that I want to be in?
  • Does this agency specialise in one particular job role and level? (For example, there would be little point in registering with an agency that specialises in Senior EA roles if you are a first jobber or at a more junior level)
  • Does this agency recruit for the location that I want to be working in?
  • Do I feel like this agency's procedure will work for me?
  • Is this agency a member of The Recruitment & Employment Confederation, or any other nationally recognised body?
  • Do I feel like this agency is being honest with me?

There are many reputable agencies out there, but many of these are very similar agencies who often share a client base. Choose the agency that feels right for you and avoid registering with many similar agencies. Spread your net and ensure there is not client cross over by asking the right questions in your initial meetings.

Most importantly, don't be afraid to ask questions when you meet your agency's consultants. And don't forget we work for you, and our number one concern is finding you the right job. Recruitment is a partnership.

At Bain and Gray, it is our number one priority to focus on you, the candidate. Our company's best practice focuses on the best service we can provide to our candidates in terms of guidance, support and advice.
