Career Ready Mentoring for A Level Students

Eleanor Sharpe - Senior PA at Ofgem and PA of the Year Award 2015 finalist - reflects on her experience mentoring through Career Ready.
Since January this year, I have been mentoring a young A level student who is studying at the Harris Academy in Eltham.
Career Ready is a UK wide charity linking employers with schools and colleges to open up the world of work to young people.
They offer a structured programme of employer engagement that enables schools and colleges to meet their statutory duty for careers.
My role has been to offer monthly 2 hour sessions with my student focusing on subjects such as:
- Interview skills
- CV preparation
- Presentation skills
- Working in teams
The sessions are held either at her school or my place of work. The idea is that student will begin to get an understanding of how an office environment operates, how staff interact and how tasks are carried out and objectives achieved.
I have witnessed my student really grow in confidence and she is rapidly developing a sense of self awareness. I am delighted that my student is now on a summer internship with PwC.
Post the internship, she will return to school to complete her A Levels in Summer 2017 before going on to university.
This experience has been very satisfying for me as I it is a wonderful opportunity to be able to impart knowledge and experience and see in the rewards of my efforts.
