A reputable medical college focussing on training, research, quality and advice for its vast member base in the health sector. They are an academic institution with a passion for increasing the standards of healthcare provision in the U.K.

Currently recruiting for a Head of External Affairs within the department with Strategic Communications, you will be leading and managing the planning, development and management of the media and communications strategy by working with all forms of media in order to build and maintain the reputation of the royal college.

What will you be doing?

Reporting to the Director of Strategic Communications, you will be;

  • Working with the Director of Strategic Communications to establish new systems to communicate the value of the high quality work being done across the College to our priority audiences.
  • Creating communications plans for College departments, faculties and divisions and manage the delivery of multiple work streams.
  • Oversee, support and performance manage the Media Manager and Public Affairs Manager on a day to day basis to build and maintain a proactive, flexible and responsive team that works creatively with colleagues in the department to deliver the communications strategy.
  • Ensure that the outputs of the External Affairs Team are of a consistently high quality and reflect the credible and evidence-based values of the College.
  • Ensure that the systems and organisation of the External Affairs Team reflect and continue to reflect the best practice in communications, recommending and implementing change where necessary to maintain efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Work closely with the Director of Strategic Communications, the Head of Policy and senior officers on public affairs objectives which have been agreed and supervise the Public Affairs Manager to deliver work programmes within agreed timescales


What they are looking for

  • Graduate or equivalent.
  • Proven experience of leading and developing media teams.
  • Demonstrable record of success in designing and managing complex and multiple communications work streams.
  • Proven and consistent track record of originating and implementing creative media or influencing ideas and collaborating with others to do so.
  • Good understanding of the principles of communications strategy and experience of creating and implementing communications plans that align with organisational objectives
  • Good knowledge of the workings of parliament and politics and UK public policy.
  • Proven ability to assimilate and communicate complex public policy ideas accurately and simply for a general audience.
  • Good experience of communications crisis management.
