How to become a Legal Secretary or Legal PA


If you are interested in working within the legal sector, starting off as a Legal Secretary or Legal PA is the perfect way to get your foot in the door. Although it may not always be a requirement to have a degree, some legal qualifications are recommended, such as a Legal Secretary Diploma.

The working environment within the legal sector is ever changing and developing, therefore so is the role of legal administrative assistants. The role can vary from day to day, although the main focus is to provide administrative support for employees within the firm or in-house legal team e.g. Lawyers, Solicitors. You will be the 'go to' person in charge of making sure everything runs smoothly and efficiently.

The top skills required to be a successful Legal PA or Legal Secretary in today's legal environment:

  • Organisational skills
    As you will be in charge of efficiently managing the office or a specific department, excellent organisational skills are essential. Events, deadlines, calendars and meetings are just some of the things you will need to keep on top of.
  • Multi-Tasking skills
    Working for more than one person at a time is a regular thing for a legal secretary. Excellent multi-tasking skills and the ability to work under pressure are important as you will be required to juggle and priorities various tasks.
  • Familiarity with legal terms
    You will be required to understand legal procedure and know how to create documents.
  • Advanced proof reading and writing skills
    Writing is an integral part of the role. You will be responsible for drafting routine files as well as proof reading legal documents.
  • Interpersonal skills
    Friendly and approachable nature with exceptional communication skills is essential as you will be required to interact daily with all levels of employees in the industry.
  • Technology skills
    Legal Secretaries will need good typing skills, general computer literacy and to be all round tech-savvy.
